Offering is a song of praise as well as a declaration – a challenge to follow God no matter what and to turn our lives into a living sacrifice (or offering) as commanded in scripture.
The song theme “so let my life become an offering, in honor to you” is based on Romans 12-1:
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship.”
All of the other lines of the song are personal declarations of praise, inspired by scripture, Bible verses and concepts, with just a few examples being:
“And you are the only way, so here in your arms I’ll stay” is rooted in Acts 4-12: ‘And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved’
The chorus: “I love you even when the storm clouds rage, and darkness surrounds me. I love you even when the things I fear, are closing in” is inspired by Jesus’s calming of the storm in the gospels, as well as Psalm 91 (verses 2 and 5):
‘This I declare, that he alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him… Now you don’t need to be afraid of the dark anymore, nor fear the dangers of the day’
Finally, “Set apart, we’re born to follow Yahweh,” explains the purpose of our lives (to bring glory to the one true God, Yahweh) and explains that God’s people are ‘set apart’ as stated in Deuteronomy 14:2 ‘You have been set apart as holy to the Lord your God’.
